The quest to understand the name of this wine and the wine itself is now the stuff of legend. While we are not about to reveal all, we can say that the style of the wine is a reflection of the belief that the Cape, with its Mediterranean climate, is eminently suited to blended reds.
The make-up of this wine is tweaked from vintage to vintage to best reflect the season and the ancient vines of great character that are an integral part of the wine’s charm and personality.. It is smooth, fine and balanced and has been a cult wine for many years now.

Tasting Note
The nose is dark, intense and brooding with aromas of black cherries, cardamom, sweet tobacco, espresso and subtle whiffs of perfume. The dark fruit character of the nose follows through onto an exceptionally complex, juicy palate with gentle nuances of ripe plums, violets, black olives, cloves, and liquorice. The mid-palate is focused, lithe and elegant with very fine, cocoa powdery tannins. The wine is medium bodied, very balanced with an earthy, layered character, covering the entire spectrum of berry fruit - from tart red plums to rich blue and black berries. The finish is svelte, clean and dry, peppery and lingering, with hints of dried cranberry, tar, graphite and smoke.

The 2019 Chocolate Block is a blend of:

Syrah (71%)
Grenache (11%)
Cinsault (9%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (8%)
Viognier (1%)

Founded in 1776, Boekenhoutskloof is one of the oldest farms situated up the "Valley" in the Franschhoek foothills. Marc Kent is the winemaker, cellarmaster, and part owner of this homestead and wine farm.

There is a 250-year old wolf trap on Boekenhoutskloof and the name is a tribute to the pioneers who in the early days of the Cape erected a wolf trap, mistakenly believing that wolves inhabited the area. To date, no wolf either real or mystical has been seen in the valley.

Boekenhoutskloof, the Franschhoek winery that shot to prominence with its first Syrah (1997) and is today rated among the Cape's leading producers. Only approximately 600 cases of the Syrah, 800 of the Cabernet are produced. Boekenhoutskloof's has a more available second label, Porcupine Ridge.

The flagship range - which includes the very good Sémillon, also made in tiny quantities - was consciously formulated through Kent's own preferences, grape availability and his desire to focus on Franschhoek. The Chocolate Block is lively purple colour with rich ripe berries on the nose. Medium bodied with fruity blackberry, sour cherry, grape and candy flavours. Hints of chocolate and spice are lurking underneath, too.

"mid-deep purple. Ripe slightly jammy berry fruits with a touch of dark chocolate and a floral note. Velvety, with a rich mouthfeel, and a blend of sweet fruit and savoury spice. Good length"
