The team at Château Grillet is very proud to introduce a new wine produced from vines on the estate since 2017: the Condrieu “La Carthery”.
They were indeed fortunate in their acquisition of a few acres of vines adjacent to the historical boundaries of Château-Grillet that come under the Condrieu appellation. They made two consecutive purchases, one in 2013 and one in 2017. This gave them two plots with 12 dry-stone terraces, known as “chaillées” in the region, that perfectly fit in with patchwork of plots that make up the estate.
From the first harvests, they could see that the wine from these plots was of high quality so the decision was made to add the Condrieu to the family of wines produced on the estate. This wine sits between the Côtes-du-Rhône and Château-Grillet.
Thanks to this purchase, today they are able to offer a complete range Viognier wines from the Rhône Valley that express the different facets of this grape variety from vines planted in the amphitheatre around the heartland of the estate.
The two plots of Condrieu cover less than 0.25 hectare and their high-quality terroir is home to vines that are around 20 years old. The largest plot (17 acres) is situated in “La Carthery”, hence the name of this wine.
The soil is naturally quite similar to that of Château-Grillet’s plots and vinification methods follow the same philosophy. However, the maturation process is much shorter than Château Grillet, giving a wine which unveils a different expression of Viognier’s aromatic complexity and can be enjoyed in its youth. It is a rare wine which is produced in small quantities.ABV 14%

The estate was acquired in June 2011 by the Pinault family, who own several other vineyards gathered under the Artémis Domaines label which are managed by Frédéric Engerer.
Château-Grillet has a rich history, illustrating perfectly the passion and devotion of many generations of men and women for this exceptional terroir.
The vineyards of Condrieu and Château-Grillet were planted by the emperor Probus in the 3rd century AD, from plants brought from Dalmatia. Numerous mosaics preserved at the archaeological site in Saint-Roman-en-Gal (around 12km away) confirm its origins and one of them shows a harvest scene including grape crushing. The early development of the vineyards in this region is probably linked to the Pax Romana. This allowed the ancient Gallic tribe the Allobroges, whose territory included part of the right bank of the Rhône facing Vienne, to acquire Roman citizenship and therefore have the right to plant vines.

Critics Review | 95 Points - DecanterGood concentration of white peach, this is rounded but not overly fat. It has more complexity, better balance and better acidity than their Côtes-du-Rhône - a big step up. Gentle, easy sweetness to the fruit. A very fine, well-balanced Condrieu. Compact and finishing on subtle peach and yellow plum notes. Made from a few rows of Viognier in AOC Condrieu that are situated at the top of the Château-Grillet amphitheatre and owned until recently by another producer. |
