A few weeks ago a Hungarian chef with a deep passion and knowledge of wines presented us with some very elegant wines to taste, and we were so impressed by the quality and value they had to offer. Hungarian wines may not be on everyone's radar just yet, but we're confident these soon will be. We've curated this case so you can discover some really incredible, top-quality wines from a lesser known region and we've also thrown in a fun fact sheet so you can get to grips with Hungarian wines!!The Wines In This Case AreSzent Tamas, Kovago, Furmint 2016
100% Furmint from the single vineyard of Kővágó; one of the first vineyards in Tokaj historically classified as first growth in the 1700s. Intense both on the nose and palate, complex with mineral, fruit, lees and bottle-age notes. Extremely long finish with great ageing potential.
Steigler Zöld Veltelíni (Grüner Veltliner) 2020
Very enjoyable full white that can be expected to improve as it ages to tame the oak further and highlight the ripe nectarines. Palate matches the nose with full bodied, creamy, biscuity, yeasty flavours, yet finishes with a light mouthfeel due to cleansing fruity acidity.
Heiman & Sons, "Szekszard", Kadarka, 2021
The old, autochthonous variety Kadarka was on the brink of extinction: it’s grown on barely 400 hectares in Hungary. Its featherlight taste, spicy aromatics make it a brilliant gastronomic companion. The Heimann's have planted new clonal selections of the variety. Through a precise and light-handed vinification, they show Kadarka in an unadulterated, sophisticated way.
Heiman & Sons, Bati Kereszt, Kekfrankos 2018
The spicy, powerful Kékfrankos (aka Blaufränkisch) is the major red variety of Hungary. Kekfrankos is otherwise know as Blaufrankisch in Austria. It possesses the outstanding property of expressing the origin where it was grown. The Heimanns demonstrate this with four separate single-vineyard expressions of Kékfrankos in an unadulterated & uncompromised way.
Gal Tibor, Egri Bikavér (Bulls Blood) Superior 2019
This wine is the truest representation of the legendary Egri Bikavér. Cool climate, volcanic soil and the combination of one of the best sites in Eger give rise to the fresh, spicy, ripe, vibrant fruits with a touch of leafiness from firm but well integrated, round tannins. Let it explode untamed out of a slightly chilled bottle!
Ipacs Szabo, Naszut Helyett, Villányi Franc 2018
Villányi Franc — the most elegant and easy to drink full bodied wine out there...Meaty, umami, ripe plums, a touch of leather with creaminess and sweet oak spice. Round, intense and full in body, yet with a superb refreshing acidity to keep it balanced.
