The nose is an explosion of flowers and ripe fruit, with an intriguing herbaceous note. It is now a more serious wine than the initial vintages, a full grown-up rather than a kid. The medium-bodied palate shows dried roses, and is long and uncomplicated, a touch sweet. It is great value- if you can find it! It’s the bigger-volume wine of the winery, but only 9,000 bottles are produced.

WHAT MAKES THIS WINE UNIQUE? Made from a 3.2-hectare (8 acre) single vineyard that was planted in 1889. This wine is a brilliant effort that shows the youthful, fresh and mineral sides of the Mencía grape. Of all the wines made by Raul, this is one of his best values. 100% Mencía. Organically grown vines planted in 1889. Tended in sandy soil with small river stones at 537 m (1,762 ft) elevation. Pair this fine, youthful and pure red with duck and blueberry sauce, roast pork tenderloin and apples.

Critics Review 2017 Raúl Pérez Ultreia Saint Jacques Rating 93 points Drink Date 2019 - 2023 Reviewed by Luis Gutiérrez Issue Date 28th Feb 2019 Source Issue 241 End of February 2019, Robert Parker,The Wine Advocate The clean, oral and 2017 Ultreia Saint Jacques comes mostly from old vineyards from different soils in Valtuille and Villadecanes fermented in stainless steel and oak vats with part of full clusters and matured in used barriques for one year. It's produced in a fresh and very drinkable way. This is one of the best values from Bierzo and Spain, and a great introduction to Bierzo. It's a more serious wine than what the wine was when it was first produced, fresh and elegant. It's very reliable and a great value. There are some 100,000 bottles that were filled in two production runs.
