</p>
<p>
In one of the less developed regions of Alentejo, innovation and quality were priorities on this 200 hectare project that includes production of wine, raising certified animals such as black pigs and pure blood Alentejo cattle, and soon a rural tourism resort.
</p>
<p>
Herdade da Malhadinha Nova project was born in 1998, when the family bought the estate. Their dream was to see the vineyards growing and produce a wine which we wanted to be different and of very high quality, so that it would amaze those whoever taste it. The dream was conquered with hard work under the supervision of a prestigious and very experienced wine maker, Luis Duarte.
</p>
<p>
In 2000 the vineyard was planted and the selection of the varieties (national and international) was very carefully made. The perfect weather conditions, the poor slate soils and the gentle well drained slopes of the property together with the careful selection of varieties (touriga national, aragonês, trincadeira, alicant boushet, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, alfrocheiro for the reds and arinto, roupeiro, Antão Vaz and Chardonnay for the whites) make up the terroir of Malhadinha Nova Estate and result in unique characteristics for the production of a wine with lots of character and great quality.
</p>
<p>
The Malhadinha winery gathers many original features for the production of the highest quality wines. Located right next to the vineyard, the winery was built on a hillside, allowing vital steps of the winemaking process to occur by gravity. With a production capacity of 150 thousand litres per year, this small production is the result of a hard green harvest: the grapes are all hand harvested and placed in 12 kg small boxes. After they are rigorously selected and fermented in refrigerated open fermenters. A selection of the best new technology combined with traditional techniques ensures that the wines truly reflect the quality of the vineyard. The barrel room is excavated deep into the hillside to provide perfect conditions for maturing red wines.
</p>
<p>
Luis Duarte, winemaker and friend of the family, has accompanied the project from the beginning. His great professional career is related with Herdade do Esporão where Luís was elected the winemaker of the year. Currently, Luis with the help of a young resident winemaker, who already has an interesting international experience, guarantees the quality and distinction of Herdade da Malhadinha Nova wines. Manuel Letras da Cruz is the viticultural consultant at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, has been brought in to apply is valuable know-how to the Malhadinha Vineyards and maximise the unique conditions available for the production of premium wines with personality. The elegance, complexity and intense fruit flavours reflect their respect for nature and all the passion and dedication that goes into creating Malhadinha Nova wines.

It is also grown in small areas on the island of Madeira and in some places in southern France. Vermentino is seemingly Spanish in origin. It travelled from Spain to Corsica in the 14th century and from there went on to Liguria. Its appearance on Sardinia was fairly recent, the final decades of the last century, and it was first planted in the Gallura at the island`s northernmost tip.
</p>
<p>
Although it is now found throughout Sardinia, Vermentino expresses itself best, yielding wines of outstanding personality,in the Gallura, an area incessantly swept by the fierce wind from the Alps, the Mistral. The area’s dry, harsh soils are not conducive to most agricultural production. The quality of the wine is due not only to the microclimatic conditions but also to the character of the terrain, which features a thin and poor substratum of granitic material. That material accounts for the wine`s pronounced perfume, which is balanced by a substantial alcohol level, fine fragrance and good body.

In the beginning, Kim Crawford Wines was one of New Zealand’s first “virtual wineries.” They sourced their grapes from growers across New Zealand, made the wine at other wineries, and managed their sales and marketing from their home in Auckland. In 1998, they began exporting some of their wine to the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Crawfords opened a cellar door (tasting room) facility in Te Awanga in Hawke’s Bay in 1999. Then they opened a state of the art winery and purchased vineyard land in Marlborough in early 2000. Kim Crawford Wines is now part of Constellation Brands.

Whole clusters are pressed, and then 100% barrel fermented in French oak (50% new) with natural yeasts at low temperatures. Aged for 12-16 months in French oak.

It is a hillside site that is on the opposite side of the river to the majority of their vines, where the soil is mineral rich and is mostly made up of clay and flintstone. The grapes are usually picked up to two weeks after the rest of the harvest has been done in order to give greater ripeness to the wine.</p>
<p>In the winery, the skins are left in contact with the wine for twelve hours before the crushing process takes place - a very modern and New World concept that seems to work really well for special cuvée Loire whites. The wine is then fermented in two batches, one in stainless steel and twenty per cent in oak barrels to give more complexity and smoothness to this very smartly crafted wine.
</p>
<p>
<strong>The Clos du Porteau is one of our favourite wineries</strong>; we've been working with them for about a year now and have really enjoyed telling their 800-year-old story through their wines. Sauvignon from the Loire gives <strong>great value for money</strong> and is considered as a fine alternative to some of the austere Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé wines and as a <strong>more modest match for food</strong> than the intensity of the New World Sauvignons that have been so much in vogue in recent years.

Complex and aromatic in the glass, the nose of this wine shows fine-fruit characters with significant oak influence. The palate is creamy and deliciously smooth, featuring those fine fruit flavours again; stonefruit and grilled nuts, along with plenty of quality oak influence, which should, with time, integrate more subtly. There is good concentration on the palate and really satisfying depth of flavour. Although still youthful at this time, this is quality wine that will reward lovers of ripe, creamy chardonnays with its finesse and complexity.

<p>The vines are 40 - 60 years old, partly ownrooted and managed organically. A spontaneous cover crop grows between the vines which keeps a good natural ecological balance of flora and fauna.
</p>
<p>
A low yield is ensured through the pruning of the vines down to 6-8 buds/vine in the winter. In June shoot thinning is done as well as removal of leaves and secondary shoots in the grape zone. This results are light weight grapes with
small berries. The total yield amounts to 45 hl/ha which is about 20% less than a bottle per vine.

David's 20 hectares are spread over the villages of Crezancy, Bue and Sancerre, ensuring the best of the Sancerre appellation is available for his blend.

The pressed grapes were fermented at between 20-21ºC followed by three months on the lees. The wine remained in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for six months before bottling. The fairly cool fermentation ensured a particularly pure, fruity style while
three months on the lees provided extra complexity and richness

Some of it was barrel fermented and this is clearly a wine of substance and potential. I loved its hint of leafiness, it very firm structure, its smoky but not exaggerated pungency and its real weight in the mouth. It tastes as though it just avoids being oily and heavy but is an admirably interesting and satisfying mouthful. I thought it would drink well over the next three years - preferably with some quite assertive food. This is the sort of wine that would very happily stand in for a white burgundy.

These Matapozuelos natives specialize in Verdejo farmed in their ancient vineyards. If you visit their vineyards you may notice something odd about the ground; the sandy soils scattered with the occasional ancient seashell might make you forget that these vineyards are located in central Spain, at an elevation of 900 meters. These sandy soils provided a natural protection from phylloxera when the pest spread across the region about 100 years ago. Ranging from 100 to 145 years old, many of those vines still grow today. Since
the winery was first established in 1991 the Arevalo family has been using these old vines in their blend for the Casamaro. In the past few years they have started to explore the possibility of harnessing the potential of these old vines, this idea came into fruition in 2006 with the first vintage of Tres Olmos. Sourced from a selection of the highest quality old vine sites, this new cuvee is fermented in stainless steel using only indigenous yeasts. This approach ensures that the wine adheres to the natural qualities that present themselves in these marvellous sites.

Borgo del Tiglio produces mainly white wines and the winemaking process seeks to obtain wines with delicate properties, complex and balanced, with the tendency to mature well over time.</p>
<p>
"My wife and I sat down for a late summer dinner at L’Androna, the best restaurant in Grado, a gorgeous seaside town in Friuli. I had just returned the day before from two weeks in Burgundy, where I tasted just about every great 2009 white Burgundy, including virtually all of the benchmarks. Within that context, the next white I tasted should have been disappointing. Instead it was a revelation. The wine? Borgo del Tiglio’s 2009 old-vine Friulano Ronco della Chiesa.
</p>
<p>"On this night, the Ronco della Chiesa was every bit the equal of the vast majority of the wines I tasted in Burgundy, and frankly far better than the average. Proprietor Nicola Manferrari is one of the leading lights in Friuli. His wines deserve far more recognition than they typically receive. Make no mistake about it, these are some of the most compelling whites being made anywhere in Italy." - <strong>91 points Antonio Galloni - The Wine Advocate</strong>

Back in 1987, they had 12 hectares of vineyard but now, following the purchase of a large chunk of prime vineyard in 2008, they have over 100. This
increase in quantity has been matched by an increase in quality, and today they remain the best producers in Lugana.

The secret to the success of the Ca` dei Frati wines is outstanding
vineyards. Most producers in the zone overcrop and train the vines high. At Ca` dei Frati, the vines are trained low, on single or double guyot, newer vineyards have a higher density of planting, and
yields are well below the average for the zone. This wine is made from grapes grown on 10 to 35 year old vines, planted on calcareous and clay soil. Vineyards include I Frati in Sirmione, San Rocco in Pozzolengo, Ronchedone in Desenzano del Garda, La Tur in Desenzano del Garda and Rovizza Alta in Peschiera del Garda. Yields are approximately 63 hectolitres per hectare.

</p>
<p>
For many years, until the arrival of André Dubosc, a local boy from a family of three generations of winemakers, the wine produced was destined for distillation and the production of Armagnac. With a group of young winegrowers Dubosc set about waking up the appellation of Saint Mont, revitalising the sweet white wines of Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh and creating Vin de Pays dry whites (Côtes de Gascogne).
In 1979 the three wine cooperatives of Plaisance, Aignan and Saint-Mont in the Gers joined forces – and initials (PL for Plaisance, AI for Aignan and MONT for Saint-Mont) – to set up a united group of cooperatives and vineyards which became “Plaimont Producteurs” in the Gers.
</p>
<p>
In 1999, Plaimont Producteurs were joined by the cooperatives of Crouseilles (producing Madiran, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh and Béarn) and Condom (Côtes de Gascogne and Condomois)</p>

Having begun her winemaking career experimenting with 3.5 hectares from her parents’ business in the Kamptal region of Austria, it didn’t take long for Birgit to build on this success and establish a winery of her own in 1992. Standing at the foot of the Gaisberg mountain, the winery is ultramodern and vinification takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with the emphasis being placed on the purity of the must prior to fermentation. Depending on the vintage, the Grüner Veltliner is also aged in barriques. The vineyard area has expanded since its beginnings and they now source fruit from more than 9 hectares from the best traditional sites in the Strass. Birgit’s wines are highly elegant, expressive wines with great personal character. Very much like Birgit herself.

He took over the Pauly estate from his father after doing vintages in California, New Zealand and other parts of Germany. Most of the seven hectares of vineyards are in the heart of the Mosel Valley in the village of Lieser, with the exception of a small parcel in the highly regarded, neighbouring village of Bernkastel. The majority of Axelís wines are dry or off-dry in style and are closed with screwcap to preserve the purity andfreshness from Riesling grown on the famous slate soils of the Mosel.</p>
<p>
Purist Riesling was harvested from the familyís steeply sloping vineyard in Lieser. Here, the soil is predominantly grey and blue slate, which is cooler than the red slate of neighbouring Bernkastel, and seems to give more minerally wines than the latter. Stringent crop-thinning and leaf-plucking ensured excellent flavour concentration in the ripe grapes, which were sorted and picked manually, to ensure only the best berries were selected at harvest time. The wine is a Kabinett, meaning that it was harvested slightly later in the season, resulting in riper fruit and a fuller palate than the earlier-picked styles.</p>

Typically for this area, there is a great variety of grape variations. The Geil family cultivates Riesling, Silvaner, Muller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Siegrebe, Huxel, Weisser Burgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Gewurztraminer as well as Pinot Noir and Blauer Portugieser.
Unlike many producers in the Rheinhessen area the Geil's are sharply limiting the yield per hectare and therefore arrive at high qualities. Their viniculture is modern and efficient but still with the aim to offer wines with individual character.

Everything I do reflects my strong belief that when you get the right varieties in the right sites you’re well on your way to making good wine.

Having got the framework right, we've been able to have a bit of fun with the Ad Hoc range, both in the winery and on the branding side too. I've tried a few things with these wines to give them unique personalities rather than just make carbon copies of some of the well established examples. We’ve gone against every bit of conventional branding wisdom with the labelling as well. Each wine has several unique labels and we’re going to change between them whenever the mood strikes.

The family-owned vineyard is managed in accordance with sustainable farming practices. Vintage 2012 great spring and summer rainfall and a long cooling ripening period, tailor-made for premium Riesling flavour production and a retention of natural acid in the fruit.

The fruit was processed in a number of individual parcels, with each contour/block of vines picked as it reached its optimum ripeness and flavour. Each parcel was then fermented separately allowing us to vary winemaking and processing techniques to suit the individual characteristics of each, and giving us the opportunity to enhance individual highlights, before blending immediately prior to bottling.

2010 offers another fine range from the Lafon Mâcon stable, which really turned a corner with their superb 2009s. These 2010s follow in the same vein, though as elsewhere it is the same story of reduced yields. The winery buildings in the out-of-the-way village of Milly-Lamartine have been expanded since last year, a necessary upgrade to match the size of the domaine. Without doubt the locality favours this type of wine and it has great keeping potential. Whatever it is like, each vintage always takes a few years to reach maturity but can then expect to last several decades without losing any of its presence.

The soil type expresses itself mainly by the vineyard’s ability to produce very powerful wines, quite high in alcohol, resulting in great maturity but rarely attacked by the noble rot (except for vintages with sufficient heat and humidity). The aromas are often discreet, even closed on the nose. It is with age that the Hengst develops above all notes of a complex spiciness.

Today they own forty hectares across five villages in the Haut-Rhin, the southern half of the picturesque vineyards overlapping the Vosges foothills, treasured for its idyllic climate, tapestry of terroirs as much for its half-timbered houses.

Olivier has arguably overseen the most notable improvements in the estate’s illustrious history: a new cellar in 1992 while retaining the traditional ‘foudre’ oval barrels; initiating biodynamic practices in 1997 (certified in 2002); and the buying of a horse in 2006 to plough the vineyards!

This, coupled with a less interventionist attitude at winemaking level, most of the work being done in the vineyards, the wines, more than ever, confidently show great finesse, brilliant fruit-expression with a racy mineral edge. Vincent Girardin really has come full circle, from someone who was producing very modern wines to someone that is really trying to obtain the fullest expression possible from his vineyards. The wines, made in collaboration with in-house oenologist Franck Grux, are intense, purely defined with intelligent use of oak. In addition, they source grapes and must from a handful of dedicated growers. Today, Olivier spends his time between his winery and greeting visitors to his “Table d’Olivier Leflaive” restaurant and guest house located in the heart of Puligny village.
