If one were to propagate the Penfolds 'sixes' vintage roll-out pattern - it's probably more like the '86 & '96 than the 1976 - from P.Gago, the maker in April 2011.

It is of great symbolic importance because it is sourced from the remaining original vineyard (5.2 ha) in the original winery at Magill, established in 1844, in Adelaide's eastern suburbs.

First made in 1983, Penfold's Magill Estate Shiraz is an elegant, medium-weight style with velvety texture and fine tannins, matured in both new French and American oak. It is a sleek, contemporary wine, yet crafted in the old-fashioned way in the 120+ year-old winery: hand-picked, vinified in open fermenters and then basket pressed.

He set the example by reducing yields, increasing significantly the density of vines per hectare, using only the best available grafts, harvesting perfectly ripe grapes and oak-ageing most of his wine.

Today, Brumont is still bursting with fresh ideas and is constantly working in improving his wines, from the very well-priced vins de Pays range to the magnificent La Tyre and this separate Chateau Bouscasse.

This wine is big, earthy wine with loads of ripe, intense fruit. Big structure, pronounced plum, blackberry and liquorice flavours. The oak is well integrated. The finish is very long and firm, with the ripe tannins melting in presence of food.

It took him fifteen years of vineyard research and three years of experimentation at the winery before Nicolas and daughter Laura decided to bottle the first Catena Malbec. They identified the best vineyard rows of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Malbec and made the first vintages of the Catena Alta wines in very small quantities. Catena Alta continues to be a limited production of single varietal wines made from a selected few rows in the Catena family's vineyards. These special barrels undergo a rigorous second selection at the winery. The Catena Alta wines can usually be drunk after three years from harvest and well into the following decades. The 2007 Catena Alta Malbec presents a dark, opaque violet colour, almost blackish in hue. The nose offers freshly ground, ripe berry fruits with layers of wild flowers, cinnamon spice, and a touch of citrus. The mouthfeel is full and coating, with exceptional weight and concentration but with a soft, supple texture. The mid palate offers rich cassis and black currant fruit flavours interwoven with hints of chocolate, vanilla and black pepper. The lengthy finish shows wonderful minerality, with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity.

A benchmark for the Amarone category, which, together with Barolo and Brunello, makes up the aristocracy of the Italian wine world. Here Masi’s unrivalled expertise in the Appassimento technique is used to give the grapes a long period of further ripening on bamboo racks and an ageing period for the wine of at least three years in casks made from the finest wood types. The expert use of indigenous grapes for the Valpolicella Classica area - Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara – is enriched by the addition of the unique Oseleta, a grape variety rediscovered by Masi.

Planted in 2001 and 2002 the row and vine spacing has been reduced giving us 5000 vines per hectare. There are a range of different clones fermented together. They rarely move the wine during fermentation and when possible movements are by gravity or pressure to reduce the effects of pumping. To ensure quality and uniformity this wine is a single batch, bottled under a screw cap closure, because they regard bottle and batch variation as unacceptable “things of the past”. High quality attention indeed. Since 2007 Muddy Water’s estate vineyards have been farmed organically, but they will only achieve full organic certification after the 2010 vintage. This wine is stunning. Elegant, smooth and absolutely georgeous. The wine is already starting to show the concentration and complexity that they believe will be the hallmark of this vineyard. This wine will benefit from decanting about half an hour before serving.

Coupled with inclement weather during bloom and stress-inducing heat during grape set, these conditions significantly reduced the size of the grape crop throughout Napa Valley, greatly concentrating flavors. Clear, mild summer weather, with warm days and cool nights, provided ideal conditions for fully maturing our Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which were harvested between September 26th and October 16th with a perfect balance of sugar and acidity.

The wonderfully pure, pretty nose of our 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is redolent of warm berry cobbler, with lovely toasted boysenberry and blackberry scents joined by hints of wild cherry, loamy earth and oak vanillin. On the supple, beautifully structured palate, the wine offers rich, vibrant blackberry, plum and black cherry flavours framed by perfectly integrated tannins and a long, savoury finish. Delicious now, this elegantly sumptuous Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon will develop further nuance with another 5-7 years’ bottle age.

Changes in ownership succeeded until in 1987 Juan Celaya a famous energy industry entrepreneur, one of the majority shareholders, took the reigns of the winery. A decisive move for distinction, quality and service plus the incorporation of star wine-makers Buenaventura Lasanta and Victor Leiva, have put Lan back on the trend of Rioja's most exclusive bodegas. A huge investment in modernizing the new premises and renovating all oak barrels has been realized and the new bodega is now fully operational. This step towards quality and consistency drove the Lan management team to fully acquire one of Galicia's most exclusive wineries of Albariño wines: Santiago Ruiz. Situated in Fuenmayor (Rioja Alta), Lan boasts a wonderful 80 hectares Estate named Finca El Cortijo, where it cultivates all of Rioja's red native varieties (tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo and graciano) plus cabernet sauvignon. The average age of the plants is 30 years, yielding astonishing aged reds -crianzas, reservas and gran reservas- all marketed under the Lan label. But crown jewel, restricted to exceptional vintages, is its label Viña Lanciano, which will be complemented by further new special cuvées (one will bear the name of Culmen Reserva 94 and another yet to be named) by the end of year 2000. Subtle, concentrated wines that will develop slowly in bottle well into the next century for a bodega that is consistently gaining up prestige and world-wide acclaim.

One of the most dramatic expressions of Spanish terroir, Clos Mogador is simply a must buy for any serious Spanish wine lover. It is one of Spain's great reds: a wonderfully rich, textured, long and complex wine. Yet before we talk about the wine we should really talk about the place. Priorat (or Grattalops to be precise in the case of Clos Mogador), some 150km south of Barcelona and perhaps 20km inland from the Mediterranean, is one of the most visually dramatic regions of the wine world. Here steep mountains of sheer slate (licorella is the local name) drop away into valleys and ravines that once must have seemed impassable to the human eye. Here many slopes are terraced and some are dotted sparsely with as many (or as few) vines as this barren soil will sustain. In the Clos Mogador vineyard, for example, 18 hectares supports only 18,000 bush grown vines (that's 400 vines per acre i.e., very few). The terraced Clos Mogador vineyards form a gigantic natural amphitheatre above the Siurana River, with an average altitude of 450 metres above sea level. Typical production is a bizarre 10 hectolitres per hectare (or less)! I suppose the climate would be called continental with hot days and cold nights and yet there is also some moderating influence from the Mediterranean ocean.

The wine is made by René Barbier, son of the famous mass market wine producer of the same name, and pioneer of the rebirth of the Priorat region. The grapes used are Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Carignan. The Grenache vines are more than 80 years old - the other varieties were planted in the 1980s. René Barbier is a strong advocate of the belief that great winemaking starts in the vineyard. His vines are made to suffer in the extremely poor slate soil and rough climate. There is no irrigation, so the roots are left to search for water, only found at a depth of 25 metres. No chemicals are used; wild herbs and plants grow between the vines. The result of the remarkably small yield is an enormous concentration of aromas and flavours. The economics of making wine from small plots of very low yielding vines means prices must be high. This has not been a problem because the wines are truly outstanding and fully justify their price. The first vintage was 1989, and this still has considerable ageing potential.

Three Barolos are produced, the standard label; the Castellero, a Barolo of friendly conversation, one that puts at ease the wine lover who enjoys it, Burgundian in style, characterised, that is, by its smoothness, elegance, and refreshing fragrance; and the Riserva Vigna Bussia, made only in great vintages, with fruit from a vineyard of little more than a hectare planted in 1980, with southwest exposure.
All of the Barolos are traditional in style, fermented for a medium-long period in average-sized wood vats, then matured for three years in 15-30-hectolitre French oak botti in cool underground cellars, but the Bussia cru receives additional ageing, following long tradition: after its first three years in large botti, it spends two more years in 54-litre demijohns before being bottled and labelled as Barolo Riserva Vigna Bussia.
Staunchly traditionalist as it may be with Barolo, Barale is quite open to new directions and modern in spirit with regard to other wines, with its Barbera d’Alba Vigna Preda, for example, made from grapes grown in a high-density, low-yield vineyard and picked very ripe, and containing even some nebbiolo and chardonnay, which matures for a year in French oak botti; or the Langhe Chardonnay, from one of the first chardonnay vineyards planted in the Barolo area, in the early 1980s, trained to spur-pruned cordon and at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare, located at Monforte and in the Bussia vineyard, no less. Fermented and aged in steel to bring out its fresh fruit aromas, it absorbs from the distinctive structure of its soils the ability to mature beautifully with time and to develop an intriguing minerally tang.
The winery’s retail list includes other important labels that complete an impressive range of offerings: the Langhe Nebbiolo, made from Bussia grapes and matured for about a year in 15- and 25-hectolitre French oak botti, and two versions of Dolcetto d’Alba, Costa di Rose and Costa Bussia, both given a light oak ageing, not enough to mar the finesse of their aromas and the unmistakable fragrance which is the hallmark of the variety.

At that time, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano appellation was going through a second Renaissance. But the wines were, to tell the truth, already famous at the time and many years before as well.

DOCG rules establish that Vino Nobile di Montepulciano must be based on a minimum of 70% of Sangiovese along with 30% of other grapes. Prugnolo gentile – a Sangiovese Grosso clone selected in the zone during the 1970’s – remains, nonetheless, the reference point grape for the wine: its name derives from its color and from the aroma of its berries which, when mature, resemble plums

G.D. Vajra was established in 1972 and named after Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico. Aldo has been gradually increasing the area under vine to 40 hectares, of which 10 are Nebbiolo for Barolo, located in such strategic spots as Bricco delle Viole, Fossati, La Volta and Coste di Vergne. A traditionalist, Aldo adheres to old-style winemaking methods, though blends these with new techniques, such as temperature controlled fermentation, to produce such superbly elegant wines.

Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes are handily picked upon the hills which surround Garda Lake. Upon these hills the Cottini Family carefully proceeds to select the grapes which compose this wine respecting a 20 years old protocol on low yield and respect for the natural qualities of the product. Here the ground is stony and calcareous
and confers to the wines structure and good acidity. It is a young wine ideal combined with white meats dishes and boiled meat. After harvesting, the grapes are swiftly fermented so they are able to be a fresh wine with characteristic cherry aromas in harmony with all the taste components of the variety. Bardolino Monte Zovo is very much one of a kind, a wine able to make any occasion truly unforgettable.

The history of both estates dates back many hundreds of years, and the earliest documentation of the village of Olena goes as far back as the 12th Century. During the 1950s, the De Marchi family planted new specialised vineyards and expanded the cellars. Today, the Isole e Olena estate is run by Paolo De Marchi and his wife Marta. Paolo comes from a family with three generations of winemaking experience in the northern part of Piemonte and his older son, Luca, now runs the family estate there, Proprieta Sperino.

2010 will be remembered for its unique climatic conditions. Following a cold and wet spring, the summer didnít arrive until the beginning of July when a short-lasting heat wave kicked in before more rain and cool weather in August. In September, maturation was late. The higher vineyards benefited from good weather in September and October. The harvest was later than usual but produced a crop of optimum quality. The yield was average and the wines are complex, aromatic with good acidity, a bright colour and silky tannins.

It was Cavour who invited French enologist Louis Oudart to the Langhe in order to develop an innovative style of winemaking suited to the Nebbiolo grape, which gave birth to modern Barolo production. Francesco Barale was among the pioneers of this fortunate wine. The first traces of the Barale family in Barolo date to a 1600 parochial register.

They owned vineyards in the Castellero, Cannubi, Preda and Costa di Rose zones. Today Sergio Barale, with his daughters Eleonora and Gloria, continue the family’s centuries-old experience of wine production. The cellar has embraced new technologies, always with the aim to increase the quality of Barolo and other typical wines from these hills.

Spring was characterised by intermittent rainfall which made it difficult to control disease in the vineyards. This lasted until flowering which started later than usual but was followed by very warm weather throughout July and early August. Ripening was slow through September, delaying the harvest which eventually took place in October. Winemaker Paolo De Marchi believes later harvests give wines that are more complex and of higher quality.
