Details
The Braunstein estate is located in the town of Purbach in the Neusiedlersee-Hügelland wine growing region in Burgenland/Austria. The family has been involved in winemaking for more than 400 years. The estate is currently run by Birgit Braunstein. The motto of their estate is "90% of wine quality is derived from work in the vineyard, the remaining 10% are determined in the cellar", this is supported by sustainable vineyard practices. The vineyard area totals 25 hectares on the slopes of the Leithaberg, with holdings in the Edelgraben, Fellner, Glauberinzer, Goldberg, Heide and Rosenberg sites. 70% of the area is planted with red varieties: Blaufränkisch (20%), Zweigelt (20%), St. Laurent (15%), Pinot Noir (10%) and Cabernet Sauvignon, and 30% is planted with white varieties Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Both white and red wines are kept on the lees for up to six months. The classical red wines are matured for one year in large oak vats, while the barrique wines are matured for two years in small oak barrels. The premium wines include the Pinot Noir Edelgraben, St. Laurent Goldberg, Blaufränkisch Heide, as well as the Oxhoft white (Chardonnay) and Oxhoft red (Cabernet Sauvignon, Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt), which are matured in barrique and unfiltered. The estate is a member of the "11 Frauen & ihre Weine" female winemakers association, which was founded by Birgit Braunstein.
