Radford Dale Syrah 2013

Availability: In stock

Quick Overview

Our objective is to achieve the best of both worlds (ie. Northern and Southern Hemisphere characteristics): classic, spicy, peppery Shiraz – with layers of firm, ripe tannins, fresh natural acidity and persistent minerality – woven into dense, juicy fruit, but kept dry, refreshing and free of intrusive alcohol. Our challenge each vintage is to accomplish balance, which isn’t easy in our sunny climate. This Syrah has power and restraint, backbone and fruit – a power-combination that highlights what the Cape can do best, with the varietal that many people believe can show it best

This premium Syrah is from two amazing vineyards, both on granite and clay “koffee klip” soils on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. One has penthouse-style, 360-degree views over Table Bay (West Coast) and False Bay (South Coast), backed by the jagged Helderberg peaks. The other faces False Bay to the south and southeast, and is about 75 to 100m higher in altitude. Two first-class spots for one first-class wine. The first, larger parcel (accounting for 80% of the final blend) is on our Heldeberg property, and was planted in 1999. It consists of various aspects and contours, generally in a southerly and southwesterly direction. The cooling sea breezes make it one of the sweetest spots in the area. The smaller parcel is 10 years older and situated on a southeast-facing slope on our neighbour’s vineyard. Bunch and grape sizes were fairly small and free of rot, and the fruit was really fantastic. The larger block is naturally more vigorous, while the smaller, older parcel yields a much lower crop. Together, the yields came in at around 40hl/ha.
