Herencia Altes Garnacha 2012

Availability: In stock

€13.95

Quick Overview

Herencia Altes old vines were once dispatched to the local cooperative but no longer. The unoaked 2010 Garnatxa Negra (100%) was given some lees contact to enhance the richness and texture. Smoke, spice box, incense, mineral, and pure black cherry aromas are striking. Mouth-filling and elegant with enough structure to keep the wine for several years, this superb value finishes with no hard edges.

Details

Herencia Altès is a project a long time in the making. For generations the family were humble grape growers, with vineyards dispersed around the village of Batea. In recent times, they have decided to give these grapes their own personality in the form of these hand-crafted wines. While Terra Alta is not yet a well-known region - tucked away in the southeastern corner of Catalonia it borders Aragón and Valencia - it is one of the largest areas in Catalonia under vine.

With plenty of old Garnatxa (Catalan for Grenache) bush vines, this is amongst the best regions in terms of quality and authenticity. The home village is Batea. Built upon Roman and Moorish foundations it preserves a beautiful historical centre and its grand church is testament to its past glories.

In terms of viticulture, it is the most important village in Terra Alta accounting for over 50% of its entire grape production. Most of the grapes are sold to cooperatives or large companies outside the region.

Herencia Altes is my dream to put Terra Alta on the map and show the true quality of these wonderful old vines.” – Nuria Altés - Winemaker
